Label: Arista - ALS 06 • Format: 2x, Vinyl LP, Promo, Sampler • Country: US • Genre: Rock • Style: Classic Rock
The Gary Wright track appeared on his album Extraction, so I'm guessing early for this. Lavish 4 x LP size foldout with cover band pictures and pictures of album sleeves. Nicely packaged with 2 pages of sleeve notes in Japanese.
A strange mix of the well-known and the arcane. Picture on Strawbs on the cover is slightly anachronistic, the Blue Weaver joining pic, including Tony Hooper, rather than Dave Lambert. The copy I have is a white label so no dates all the text except the titles are in Japanesebut I guess from the inclusion of the Esperanto track and the Supertramp track, both released inthat it was another compilation.
Only one Strawbs track "Temperament Of Mind". No Obi on my copy, but Hurry Sundown - Various - Arista AOR Sampler seems other volumes had them. Same lavish Japanese production as above, the album sleeve has a cut out to show underlying picture of Bacharach.
No booklet in my copy, as there was with Vol 6 above. Not one but two Obi's - the left hand Obi extends to the back, the second is a small strip which only goes round the front cover of the gatefold sleeve. Production by Bacharach and Phil Ramone! No indication of the source of other recordings unless they are in the back of Hurry Sundown - Various - Arista AOR Sampler text. A nice King Records sampler, white typed label with a by-then standard company illustrated front sleeve, with a typed track listing sellotaped to the reverse.
And of course, Tony Visconti produce the T Rex track. There's a Vinegar Joe track too, but John Hawken had left the band by then. And of course, Tony Visconti produced the T Rex track. The front cover has a colour vignette of Hudson Ford same sht as used for the insert in Nickelodeon The Strawbs are on the back in black and white - the first Hero And Heroine line-up promo shot, not the "Part Of The Union" line-up.
There's a track from Juicy Lucy, of which Coombes was also a member, but I don't think he played on that. This is a mix of music, political satire and comedy: "This album features cuts from artists whose albums are advertised in the National Lampoon and is intended for promotional use only. Unusually, a Hudson Ford Hurry Sundown - Various - Arista AOR Sampler from 's Nickelodeon features on this Brazilian compilation.
A patchy collection, some good stuff but some cheesy rubbish as well - volume 8 for includes "Part Of The Union".
For sleeve notes on the Strawbs, click on the thumbnail below. Not the most politically correct album cover in R U Ready - Manny Norté - UK Mashup! world Dave Lambert's vocal very high in the mix, making the chorus a clear duet.
From the cymbals, I'm guess it was the Hero And Heroine band on this. Sleeve notes run: "Although unfortunately never then issues, this collection was originally prepared in by the late Dr Terrence H "Telly" Fone. Gwezenn An Avaloù (El Manzano) - Diaouled Ar Menez - Bretaña edition was re-edited by Art Knuvo and Deek Kibard from the Doctor's original manuscripts and re-recorded and mastered from the original tapes by Sparko Time.
Thanks to Roy N Oak for the cover On my copy someone has typed the track listing onto the white inner sleeve Quite a few albums released in Brazil including Deep Cuts. Released in - there's a little sticker on the back " - Anos de Som Gravado" Years of Recorded Sound.
